Stubby, a bull terrier mix, is often referred to as America’s first war dog. He attached himself to his regiment when they were training for WWI in 1917 in New Haven, Ct. When it was time for the outfit to ship to Europe, Stubby was smuggled aboard and hidden in the transport ship. Upon arriving at the front in France, Stubby quickly adapted to artillery fire. He wasn’t scared and soon began to recognize the sound of a shell that would come close (just like Dublin, the Trench Cat). He then learned to sprint to the nearest shelter, and soon reached the dugouts before the men could. So the soldiers would pay attention to Stubby and when he ran, they did!
