In the First World War German U-Boats were the scourge of the seas. But they didn’t always torpedo the vessels they sank. To save torpedoes for bigger targets, a U-Boat might surface and sink a ship using its deck gun. In one such incident, the crew of a ship about to be sunk departed to the lifeboats. But they forgot the ship’s terrier. As they rowed away from the doomed vessel, the U-Boat captain saw the dog alone on the deck. He maneuvered alongside and rescued the pup before sinking the ship with gunfire. The crew named her Lotte, and eventually dropped her off when they returned to base in Germany. Lotte was then adopted by a family in Prussia, where she became a much loved part of the household. Next: The Cat that captured a Marine.
The Marooned Terrier.
