Incorporate Storage. There is usually never enough cabinet space in a kitchen. So make sure you add storage capability to your island. As well as the typical front side cabinets and drawers, add cabinets to back side to maximize your storage space. Multiple Outlets. Outlets make an island more functional. The sides are the usual place, but outlets can also be added to the top. These type of outlets retract into the counter top when not in use, and can be the only option if the island has waterfall sides. Sufficient Lighting. There is nothing worse than a dark kitchen. So adequate light over the counter top work surface is essential. Typically pendent lighting is placed over the island, often to supplement in-ceiling or can lighting for a layered approach.
