Back in the 1970-80s, about 40% of new homes in the Phoenix metro area were built with pools. As of 2014, only 6% were. And some owners of older homes are removing existing pools. Reasons given are safety, the burden and cost of ongoing maintenance, and the energy savings. As a result the Phoenix area could fall out of the top ten large metro areas with the highest percentage of homes with pools.
