In Arizona, repairs under $1,000 can be performed by a person without a contractor’s license. But the “handyman exemption” isn’t that simple. An important limitation is that the aggregate contract price, including labor, materials and all other items, is less than $1,000. So if a $900 component is being installed, the labor couldn’t be more than $99. In addition to the requirement that the price be under $1,000, the work being performed must be “of a casual or minor nature.” Among other thing, that excludes anything that could be deemed a health and safety matter. Furthermore, if the work requires a local building permit, a licensed contractor must be used regardless of the contract price. Don’t violate the law – when in doubt, use a licensed contractor.
