My latest entry about pets in wartime is about Smoky, a 4 pound female Yorkshire Terrier. She became a war hero and has six memorials honoring her nationally. Smoky was found in the South Pacific in February 1944, sitting in an abandoned Japanese foxhole in the New Guinea jungle. The soldiers thought she belonged to the Japanese, but she did not understand commands in that language. William Wynne, a reconnaissance photographer, adopted her and shared adventures with Smoky, that ranged from flying in float planes to Smoky assisting engineers by laying communications wire by pulling it with her teeth. Smoky also entertained troops and wounded soldiers with the more than 200 tricks Wynne taught her. After the war and brief stint in Hollywood, they starred on their own shows on all 3 television channels Cleveland had at the time.
