Old refrigerators and freezers waste energy and money. If you replace an old unit, you will lower your electric bill. In addition, your utility company will pick up and haul away the unit for you, and they will pay you to do so.

Both the Salt River Project (“SRP”) and Arizona Public Service (“APS”) participate in the program. Both programs are substantially identical, and require that you be either a current SRP or APS customer. Check your electric bill to determine which utility services the property where the unit is located.

The programs help customers save money by eliminating older, less energy efficient refrigerators and freezers. The utilities estimate that turning in that old refrigerator can save you up to $100 a year on your energy bill. APS has a Retirement Savings Calculator that will help you find out how much energy your refrigerator uses, and how much you can save by buying an Energy Star unit.

You also help the environment by reducing overall energy consumption, which reduces the need for more power plants. Because the refrigerator and freezers are recycled, they do not end up in one of the landfills servicing the Phoenix metropolitan area. The refrigerator and freezer recycling procedure used utilizes a state-of-the-art patented process that recycles 95% of the contents.

Plus they haul it away for free, and mail you a $30 rebate!

First check to see if your old unit qualifies for the programs. The refrigerator or freezer must be clean, empty and in working condition. The unit will be checked for a cold temperature, so leave it plugged in the night before. The unit must meet a size requirement, which is 10 cu. ft. – 30 cu. ft., when measuring the interior. Basically this includes most units, excluding commercial or oversize units, and small “dorm size” types.

Two units can be recycled per year. Someone must be present to sign a release, and it must be assessable to the pickup crew.
